The Indian National Students Organisation (INSO) on Friday staged a protest near Gandhi Bhawan in Panjab University, and burnt an effigy of Gopal Goyal Kanda in connection with Geetika Sharma’s suicide case. The protest march was led by INSO PU president Somvir Singh and INSO Chandigrah president Anil Ghanghas.

More than 60 party workers raised slogans against Kanda seeking justice for Geetika’s family. They urged the government to take strict action against the culprit.

VARANASI: In response to a call given by Uttar Pradesh Udyog Vyapar Pratinidhi Mandal, members of Varanasi Vyapar Mandal staged a sit-in, opposing foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail, at Lahurabir crossing on Thursday.


The members of VVM and other trade associations burnt effigy of a five-faced demon and held a meeting to discuss the key issues of local businessmen. VVM secretary Vishwanath Dubey said the Central government is not concentrating to control price rise. It is standing on knees in front of foreign market. FDI in retail would badly affect local traders and small-scale enterprises. Around 7 crore people will become jobless if the FDI is allowed in retail sector, the traders alleged.

It seems Madonna is taking a little heat today after voicing her support for anti-Putin punk rock band "Pussy Riot" in her Moscow concert tour stop last night, prompting a radical group of Orthodox believers in Moscow to burn Madonna's portrait in effigy. The religious demonstrators said that. while they wish no ill will for Madonna as a person, the burning was a necessity to "drive the demons out."

In a stoic ritual-like walk, the Orthodox religious extremists gathered themselves beside the river running alongside Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow, the scene of Pussy Riot's controversial expression.

Denouncing the failure of the Government to make urea available to farmers at the price fixed by the Government, farmers today staged a protest demonstration at Senjam Chirang by burning effigies of the top officials of Agriculture Department.
The protesters also contended that the weight of urea bags provided to them weighed less than their standard weight.
In addition to burning effigies, the protest demonstration held under the aegis of the All Manipur Women Democratic Front also figured chanting of slogans.
The All Manipur Women Democratic Front secretary said that urea is being provided to the farmers at a price higher than the price fixed by the Government.

A crude effigy was produced during the rodeo on Saturday night, and then violently beaten and destroyed in response to an announcer's call to the audience: "Who wants to rip Obama's head off?"

MUMBAI: Twelve party workers of the Republican Party of India (RPI) were booked by the Malwani police on charges of unlawful assembly after they organized a gathering at Madh. The accused also burnt the effigy of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.
The incident took place around 6 pm on Sunday near the Sena shakha at Madh Jetty opposite Pascalwadi. RPI workers had organized the gathering to protest against inflation. They also wanted to discuss the recruitment of youths into the party. While the gathering was on, some of the party workers started shouting slogans against Yadav and set fire to his effigy.

Several dozens protesters managed to stay in the square long enough to spread some leaflets around and burn an effigy of President Vladimir Putin.

An NGO working for the cause of Union Carbide gas leak disaster today hanged and burnt effigies of International Olympic Committee for Dow Chemical's sponsorship of the sporting event, being held in London.

NGO Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan also burnt effigies of Dow Chemical, Union and Madhya Pradesh governments.

The NGO convener Abdul Jabbar said both the Centre and the state government did nothing to ensure that a delegation from India does not take part in the London Olympics.

"Despite our opposition, nothing has happened and Dow Chemcial continues to sponsor London Olympics," he said.

Activists working for the victims of the 1984 gas leak tragedy are opposed to Dow Chemical as the company acquired Union Carbide later.

It was a familiar sight this time of year: Students and farmers burning effigies of President Benigno Aquino and Uncle Sam. But they were stopped by police from getting close to the Batasang Pambansa complex to denounce the government’s alleged failure to improve the plight of workers, triggering a brief melee that left scores injured.

Fire trucks, steel barricades and a 6,000-strong police force blocked the protesters led by the leftist group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) on Commonwealth Avenue in front of Ever Gotesco mall about 2 kilometers from the Congress building, where the President delivered his annual State of the Nation Address (Sona).

"The rule of law has vanished in Bihar. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev escaped unhurt after a group of Congress workers stoned his motorcade, burnt his effigy, pulled down his hoardings and waved black flags at him while he was on his way to a attend a programme in Bhopal's Ayodhya Bypass area on Thursday.
The attack came a day after state Congress leader Manak Agarwal has threatened to "beat him up if he comes to Bhopal" for his reported comments against Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh and his family. Agarwal had called Ramdev "insane" for dressing up like a woman to escape from New Delhi's Ram Lila Maidan last year. "After his comments against our leader, we will not spare him. He is the greatest cheat in the country," he had told reporters.
