The Congress and the CPI (ML) members staged separate protests in Chikmagalur against the assault on youth at Morning Mist homestay in Padil.
The protestors burnt the effigy of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike and submitted a memorandum to the Additional DC.

An NGO working for the cause of Union Carbide gas leak disaster today hanged and burnt effigies of International Olympic Committee for Dow Chemical's sponsorship of the sporting event, being held in London.

NGO Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan also burnt effigies of Dow Chemical, Union and Madhya Pradesh governments.

The NGO convener Abdul Jabbar said both the Centre and the state government did nothing to ensure that a delegation from India does not take part in the London Olympics.

"Despite our opposition, nothing has happened and Dow Chemcial continues to sponsor London Olympics," he said.

Activists working for the victims of the 1984 gas leak tragedy are opposed to Dow Chemical as the company acquired Union Carbide later.

It was a familiar sight this time of year: Students and farmers burning effigies of President Benigno Aquino and Uncle Sam. But they were stopped by police from getting close to the Batasang Pambansa complex to denounce the government’s alleged failure to improve the plight of workers, triggering a brief melee that left scores injured.

Fire trucks, steel barricades and a 6,000-strong police force blocked the protesters led by the leftist group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) on Commonwealth Avenue in front of Ever Gotesco mall about 2 kilometers from the Congress building, where the President delivered his annual State of the Nation Address (Sona).

Meanwhile Social Development Minister Paula Bennett's making light of the protests her welfare reforms have sparked.
She's joked how she's the only government minister to have had her effigy burnt.
And Ms Bennett says if the first round of welfare reforms was interesting then just wait for stage two.
"I must admit that I often sit there and I think of these Sue Bradford and the (likes) that are sitting around a table with their ripped up newspaper and glue and sort of a photo of me and making a paper mache life-size... but they've got time, they've got time."

The RJD today burnt an effigy of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar here to protest alleged deterioration in law and order in the state. Partymen led by the state party Secretary General Ramkripal Yadav, took out a procession from the state party office on Beerchand Patel road to the busy Dakbungalow roundabout here disrupting traffic for a few hours before burning the effigy. "The rule of law has vanished in Bihar. Atrocities on women, mahadalits, dalits and the oppressed and underprivileged have increased and loot, kidnapping, rape and murder have become the order of the day," Yadav alleged to reporters.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev escaped unhurt after a group of Congress workers stoned his motorcade, burnt his effigy, pulled down his hoardings and waved black flags at him while he was on his way to a attend a programme in Bhopal's Ayodhya Bypass area on Thursday.
The attack came a day after state Congress leader Manak Agarwal has threatened to "beat him up if he comes to Bhopal" for his reported comments against Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh and his family. Agarwal had called Ramdev "insane" for dressing up like a woman to escape from New Delhi's Ram Lila Maidan last year. "After his comments against our leader, we will not spare him. He is the greatest cheat in the country," he had told reporters.
